How to start a daily standup meeting?
Looking for a way to start a daily standup meeting? The trick is to plan every step of the meeting ahead of time. This is the approach that helped my team meet our target and succeed at every goal we set last year. We were also able to grow our yearly revenue in that same period.
Step #1: Set a start time
Every standup should have a time it commences. You can set a commencement time based on your office’s local time. This way, it will be more convenient for other members of the team to adhere to it.
Step #2: Warm-up
Although this step is optional, it can enhance the blood flow for team members before they start their task work. You can organize a brief physical activity to set a good tone for the day’s work. This also helps the meeting flow faster and better.
Step #3: Begin
Kick-start your meeting and choose the first person. This person can either be whoever entered the stand-up meeting room last, or any random person of your choice.
Step #4: Answer the 3 important questions
Within a time frame of 30 seconds – 1 minute, each member of the team should answer these questions: (1) What task did you complete yesterday? (2) What tasks are you planning to complete today? (3) Have you encountered any impediments/stumbling blocks?
Step #5: End
Close the daily meeting with a cheer, team clap, or a firm reminder of your organization’s mission.
What to talk about in your daily standup?
As stated earlier, there are basically three questions you should talk about in your daily standup. Let’s take a look at each of these questions and how you can use them.
1. What task did you complete yesterday?
Ask your team members to quickly discuss the work they have been able to complete since the last standup. Doing so updates you on what is done, so you can decide the next step to take to move forward.
2. What tasks are you planning to complete today?
Ask them about their plans for the current workday. Here, each member of the team has to write down their goal for that day. Take note of what they write.
3. Have you encountered any impediments/stumbling blocks?
If you or any other member of the team is facing any work-related challenge, this is where it should be discussed, sorted out, and documented. Discuss all challenges.

Here are a few ways to keep your daily standups efficient, effective, and hassle-free:
Be time conscious — The maximum time for the standup meeting should be 15 minutes.
Be professional—Stay professional in every aspect of the meeting, including your time of arrival, and listening to team members.
Be valuable—Everything you say in the meeting should be valuable and useful to every member of the team. Ensure that you do not exclusively talk about yourself or a member of the team.
Engage remote employees—Ensure that you involve employees who work remotely in your daily standup meetings.
Go to the source—Create a time for team members to share their plans, blockers, and notable work progress before the start of your daily standup meeting. This helps the team to spend time on what matters the most.
